| Kolkata, renamed very recently after the popular Bengali utterance, was founded by Job Charnock, Agent of East India Company in August, 1690 out of 3 villages namely Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kolkata on the east bank of River Ganga or Hugli. |

| Botanical Garden , the gardens were originally founded in 1786 by Colonel Kyd, containing about 12,000 living plants and over two and half million dried out plant specimens in the herbarium collected from all over the world. The main attraction of the garden is the 200 year old Banyan Tree, claimed to have the second largest canopy in the world. The Botanical Garden is the world's largest, having a circumference of 330m. |
