  SPITI VALLEY
Spiti, also called “Piti” a veritable Shangri-la is a cold mountain desert, located on the Tibetan border and flanked on the south-east by district of kinnaur, north-east by Tibet, north by Ladakh, west by Lahaul and to the south by district of kullu.
Geologically and archaeologically, Spiti is a living museum. The mountains are devoid of any vegetation and erosion by wind, sun and snow over thousands of years has laid bare the rocks. The rugged and rocky mountain slopes sweep down to the river beds giving the landscape a moon-like appearance. Piti Valley is formed by the Spiti river, which rises on the slopes of Kunzam La (4551 M) (32 0 24'N, 77 0 39'E) and ends at the river's confluence with the Pare Chu near Sumdo (3230 M) (32 0 04'N, 78 0 36'E). The length of the valley from Kunzam Pass to Sumdo is about 150 km.
Spiti has its sub divisional headquarters at Kaza. The area's valleys are narrow – except portions of the Spiti which, at places, has a width of up to 3 km. Cultivable land is marginal and there are no trees except for a few patches and willows. And for all this seeming bleakness, Spiti has a haunting and unforgettable beauty. There is a fair amount of wildlife in the region. – including the snow leopard and ibex in the Pin valley.
The mountainscape in Spiti has an exotic appearance. The river is a fast moving torrent, which cut its way through the ages to the bottom of a deep ravine. The valley is scarcely a mile across, with narrow strips of cultivation land lying 305 metres (1000 ft) above the river bed. Steep Rocky Mountains rise from these level strips to heights of several thousand feet. All around a marvelous panorama of rugged crags and slopes that change their colours from pale pink to bright scarlet, alternates with the soft blues and greens of the glaciers.
