Meghalaya, the 21st state of the Indian Union, was declared a full fledged state on January 21st, 1972. Having an area of 22,429 square kilometers and a population of 17,74,778 (1991 census), the higher ridges of the State lie in the coniferous belt, gradually sloping down to sub-tropical and tropical zones. Tucked away in the north eastern region of India, it lies between 25 0 and 26.15 0 north latitude and 89.45 0 and 92.47 0 east longitude. The Statehas at present seven administrative districts-West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, West khasi Hills, East khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and Jaintia Hills.
Meghalaya is also rich in wildlife. It is the home of a variety of animals and birds, the best known of them being elephants, tigers, golden cats, binturongs, slow loris, monkeys of different types and interesting birds including hornbills, patridges, teals, snipes and quails. The State has two National Parks, the Nokrek National Park and the Balpakram National Park , and two Wildlife Sancturies, the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary and Siju Wildlife Sanctuary . Species like Golden Cat, Golden Langur and Hoolock Gibbon are endemic to Meghlaya.
THE PEOPLE :
The khasi, Jaintia , Bhoi, War, collectively known as the Hynniewtrep people predominantly inhabit the districts of East Meghalaya, also known to be one of the earliest ethnic group of settlers in the Indian sub-continent, belonging to the Proto Austroloid Monkhmer race.
The Garo Hills is predominantly inhabited by the Garos, belonging to the Bodo family of the Tibeto-Burman race, said to have migrated from Tibet. The Garos prefer to call themselves as Achiks and the land they inhabit ,as the Achik-land.
JAINTIA HILLS :
Jowai, headquarters of the Jaintia Hills district is situated 64 kms away from Shillong, along the Shillong – Silchar national highway. A picturesque town circled by the majestic Myntdu river.
GARO HILLS 30 :
Garo Hills known for its abundance of wildlife, should interest,naturalists and photographers to capture the variegated facets of life of a unique range of flora and fauna Two mountain ranges-the Arabella range and the Tura range, pass through the Garo Hills, forming the great Balpakram Valley in between. The headquarters town of Tura is 323 kms via Guwahati, at an Nokrek Peak with elevation of 1,412 metres.
Tura has a picturesque landscape of hills against a backdrop of low –lying plains, with the mighty river Brahmaputra making sweeping curves as it flows towards Bangladesh. A sunset view can be best seen from Tura Peak at 1,400 metres and its summit can be reached by a five kilometers trek, partly by hiking and also by rock climbing.
