| Guru Padmasambhava's contribution to the birth of Buddhism in Sikkim can be traced to the eighth century when he personally visited and blessed Sikkim. He meditated in all its four corners and fortified it against all the negativities of human existence and established the Nyingma Order of Tibetan Buddhism. He is worshipped as the Patron Saint of Sikkim.
On Maha Shivaratri, February 18,2004,Sikkim Chief Minister, Dr.Pawan Chamling ceremonially unveiled the tallest statue of Guru Padmasambhava at Samdruptse, Namchi in South Sikkim. More than 1,000 labourers, dozens of engineers, architects, sculptors and artisans worked for three years to complete the project at a cost of Rs.6.76 crores.
The 138 ft statue has been designed as per the details mentioned in the sacred scripture called Thekeha.Great care has been taken at every stage of the construction to ensure that the proportion and measurements corresponded to the sacred texts. The statue has been designed without a canopy. It is thus visible from as far away as the India-Nepal border, Gyalshing and Darjeeling. At any time of the day or night, the statue can see in all its breathtaking glory.
The statue of the Buddhist master is expected to put Sikkim firmly on to the map of Buddhist Tourism in the country and already hordes of tourists make their way to Sampruptse top see the grand tribute paid by Sikkim to its Patron Saint.
Groups of tourists, domestic as well as from Bhutan, Nepal and even Sri Lanka and Japan are turning Samdruptse into a major destination on the religious circuit. The Samdruptse Hill is fast turning into a must visit pilgrimage site.
Intricate work and great attention along with the grandness of the project have ensured that Samdruptse will always lure both devotees as well as tourists. |

Which stands 42 feet and has a circumference of 97 feet, or the gigantic statue of Maitreya at Tashihunpo Monastery at Shigatse which stands at 85 ft. None, as the records show, is as grand as the one at Samdruptse. |
